Has anyone ever said to you ‘but you’re a mom’? What does that mean exactly?? I had a colleague say this to me a few times and do you want to know why?

Because I went out on the weekend; because I had fun filled night out whilst my kids were with their dad? Did I mention that my colleague was a male? Does being a mother mean that I can’t have fun without my kids? That I am no longer a person? That I am no longer a woman? Does being a mother mean I have to give up who I am? No, no, no and NO!

Being a mother means that I get to wear multiple hats and be pretty great at it all. The fact is, women are expected to be Suzy homemaker and still be a 50% partner on all fronts (and more) within the home. We provide for our kids and for our partners but often neglect ourselves and at the end of it all, we are left drained, exhausted, neglected. So with all the demands in our lives, where does that leave time for us? Women who are blessed to have men in their lives who are equal and more are lucky. I envy these women. It’s not every day that you find a man who is a good man to you, an amazing dad to the kids and a help around the house. If you have this man, cherish him.

So what do you do if you find yourself a single mom like myself? Well, a few times after work, I take the kids with me to gym. I get to do what I enjoy – exercise – even when my kids are with me. And the bonus of it all is that the kids actually love going to the daycare at Virgin Active so it’s a win-win. We live in a first floor flat and taking them to gym means they get to play with the kids that they have befriended. They’re happy, I’m happy.
